ABSTRACT Phosphites can be considered an additional strategy to be included in disease management programs. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the application of potassium phosphite (KPhi) in common bean seeds, in the reduction of intensity of root rot (Rhizoctonia solani) and in the compatibility with Rhizobium tropici, a nitrogen-fixing bacterium. The emergence speed index (ESI) and the percentage of total emergence were evaluated in seeds inoculated with R. solani and treated with KPhi. The number of nodules per root system, dry nodule mass, quantified the compatibility Phi x R. tropici, dry mass, nitrogen content, and nitrogen accumulation in the shoots. KPhi promoted a higher ESI and increase in plant stand compared to the control treatment. The number of nodules formed and the nitrogen content and accumulation in the KPhi treatments were similar to control (seeds inoculated with R. tropici). Thus, the treatment of seeds with KPhi provides control of R. solani and is compatible with R. tropici.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de produtos alternativos na proteção da videira (Vitis vinifera) contra o míldio (Plasmopara viticola), bem como determinar a influência desses produtos na qualidade dos frutos da cultivar Merlot. Para o controle da doença, foram utilizados produtos à base de extratos vegetais, manano-oligossacarídeos fosforilados, fosfitos e acibenzolar-S-metil, além de fungicidas tradicionais. A intensidade do míldio em folhas e cachos, a produtividade, o número total de cachos por parcela, o peso médio do cacho e baga e as características analíticas do mosto foram avaliados nas safras de 2007/2008 e 2008/2009. Os fosfitos proporcionaram proteção contra o míldio da videira, com produtividade semelhante à do tratamento com fungicidas tradicionais. Os tratamentos baseados em manano-oligossacarídeos fosforilados, acibenzolar-S-metil e extratos vegetais não apresentaram controle eficiente do míldio. Os produtos alternativos testados não influenciam a qualidade analítica dos frutos, mas proporcionam, em geral, peso médio de cachos e de bagas menor que o do tratamento com fungicidas.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of alternative products for the protection of vine (Vitis vinifera) against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), and to determine the influence of these products on the quality of Merlot cultivar grapes. Products based on plant extracts, phosphorylated mannanoligosaccharides, phosphites and acibenzolar-S-methyl, besides traditional fungicides, were used for the disease control. The intensity of downy mildew on leaves and bunches, productivity, total number of bunches per plot, average weight of bunch and berry and analytical characteristics of grapes were assessed during the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 seasons. Phosphites provided protection against downy mildew, and the yield was similar that of to the treatment with traditional fungicides. Treatments based on phosphorylated mannanoligosaccharides, acibenzolar-S-methyl and plant extracts showed no effective control of downy mildew. The alternative products tested do not influence the analytical quality of the grapes, but generally provide lower average weight of bunches and berries than the treatment with fungicides.

A proteção do cacaueiro com o uso de produtos de natureza biótica ou abiótica visando à indução de resistência é uma estratégia importante, que pode ampliar a eficácia de controle da vassoura-de-bruxa, causada por Moniliophthora perniciosa. Objetivou-se investigar o efeito de doses e épocas de aplicação de um produto à base de mananoligossacarídeo fosforilado (Agro-Mos®) sobre a proteção de mudas de cacaueiro contra M. perniciosa bem como a sua toxicidade direta sobre o patógeno e caracterizar alguns mecanismos bioquímicos envolvidos na resposta de defesa da planta. Verificou-se que o Agro-Mos® conferiu maior proteção às mudas de cacaueiro contra a vassoura-de-bruxa em relação ao indutor de resistência padrão, acibenzolar S-metil (ASM). O crescimento micelial de M. perniciosa in vitro foi completamente inibido pelo Agro-Mos® e o Recop® (oxicloreto de cobre), nos intervalos de 3,6 a 7,0 mL.L-1 e 0,1 a 0,2 g.L-1, respectivamente. Em plantas tratadas com ASM, Agro-Mos® e Agro-Mos® Experimental (sem Cu++), observou-se aumento das atividades de quitinases, β-1,3-glucanases, peroxidases de guaiacol e oxidases de polifenóis, sem alteração do conteúdo de lignina e fenóis solúveis totais. A redução da incidência da doença propiciada pelo Agro-Mos®, associada com o seu efeito tóxico in vitro e com a ativação de algumas enzimas relacionadas às respostas de defesa da planta, sugere que o Agro-Mos® possui efeito de proteção e indução de resistência contra vassoura-de-bruxa em mudas de cacaueiro.

Protecting the cacao crop by using biotic and abiotic products, seeking to induce plant resistance, is an important strategy, which can broaden the effectiveness of cacao witches' broom control. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of doses and times of application of a mannanoligosaccharide based product (Agro-Mos®) on cacao seedlings against Moniliophthora perniciosa, as well as its direct toxicity to the pathogen and to characterize some biochemical mechanisms involved in plant defense response. It was found that Agro-Mos® conferred greater protection for cacao seedlings against witches' broom in relation to acibenzolar S-methyl, ASM. The in vitro mycelial growth of M. perniciosa was completely inhibited by Agro-Mos® and Recop® (copper oxichloride) at dose intervals of 3.6 to 7.0 mL.L-1, and 0.1 to 0.2 g.L-1, respectively. There were increased activities of chitinases, β-1,3-glucanases, guaiacol peroxidases, polyphenol oxidases, without changes in the content of lignin and total soluble phenolics in plants treated with ASM, Agro-Mos® or Experimental Agro-Mos® (without Cu++). The disease incidence reduction due to Agro-Mos®, associated with its in vitro toxic effect and the activation of some enzymes related to plant defense response, suggests that Agro-Mos® has a direct effect against the fungus and is also activating plant defense mechanisms.
